The five-man games ran smoothly and fast on three fields at Full
Throttle Paintball in Volusia County. Most of the games finished well
before the five-minute limit, which meant the tournament stayed ahead
of schedule throughout the day and was finished by 2:30 p.m. Two of the fields at Full Throttle were small airball fields, which meant the games were furious as players had to live behind their guns. The third field was a bigger hyperball field that made it easier for players to make bigger runs off the break. That field also featured a small alligator sunning itself in an adjacent pond. Because this is the first year of the PMI-backed tournament, officials say they are still learning as they go along. They studied the PMI series in Texas to get some tips on how to run the tournament, said Bob Byer, tournament promoter in Florida. PMI also has been very supportive, he said. "Any questions, they have really helped out,'' Byer said. Several teams that had a good showing at the first tournament at
West Palm Beach also did well at the tournament Sunday. The tournament on Sunday also featured a new division: Rookie. Team Who and Who Too also placed in the Novice and Rookie divisions. In the Amateur division, Union and Nemesis made it to the finals
after scorching through the prelims. But the surprise at the end of the
tournament was that Nonstop won the finals round for the Amateur division.
Second place went to Union and Nemesis took third. Nonstop did not play at the first tournament earlier this year. On Sunday, the team showed up late, arriving after the captain's meeting. After a hurried start, Nonstop started out slow during the prelims. But once the team got to the finals, they were a tough team to beat. Even though this is the first year of the series, it has been able to attract a solid number of teams and has done a good job of spreading the tournaments throughout the state. The list of teams competing in the series is expected to continue growing. "Things are going good," Byer said.
